Anniversary of the liberation of KL Auschwitz

Posted on 2015-01-112024-09-09

On the day of 27th of January we celebrate another anniversary of KL Auschwitz complex liberation. 70 years already separate us from the moment when soldiers of the Red Army arrived at the area of the camp. They’ve brought thelong awaited freedom for those, who lost all hope of retrieving it. Freed prisoners and now occupant free Polish society in very short time realized, that liberators brought with them a new slavery, sealed with Yaltan provisions.

Liberation was preceded with happenings dramatic in result for the prisoners. Progress of the Red Army on eastern front determined the evacuation decision and erasing proof of genocide that Germans were guilty of. Since August 1944 to January 1945 a planned action went on, which aim was realization of forementioned tasks. The prisoners became its victims, which have been moved farther into Reich, in numbers oscillating around 100 thousand people. Most tragic for the prisoners was the last part, clearing of the camp. From 17th to 21st January hundreds able to march were sent out. From the 56 thousand people, estimated 9 to 15 thousands lost their lives during the Death Marches. Remaining in the camp were the sick and exhausted, which were to be exterminated by the camp SS soldiers. That plan didn’t work tho, and prisoners in the worst shape lived to liberation.

Like every year, representatives of the Foundation of Memory Sites Near Auschwitz – Birkenau, on the day of the anniversary, want to take part in the main celebrations commemorating victims, organized by State Museum Auschwitz – Birkenau.

On that day, we will also pay our tribute and lay flowers under the monument of camp victims at the area of former sub-camp Jawischowitz in Brzeszcze, and then at the site of Budy – Bór subcamp by the former building of the Penal Company, under the sign commemorating homicide of the female prisoners.
